Nine players. A diamond of dirt in a grassy field. A long stick and a ball. That is how baseball came to be in America. Now, the sport is played worldwide by people of any age. Major League Baseball was founded in 1876, and the teams were soon divided into two conferences: National and American. The professional baseball organization encountered misfortunes that stopped play including World Wars, influenza breakouts, player strikes and lockouts. Currently, thirty teams across North America compete on the baseball diamond beginning the season in April and culminating in late October with the World Series.
